Our class has been making hats since after we read the story about Dwaina Brooks helping a homeless shelter in Dallas, TX by making lunches. Well, instead of our class making lunches, we are making hats. We got this idea from Miss Sizer, our teacher, telling us about making hat with knitting looms. We have enjoyed making hats so much that we have over 50!!!
Even though we won't be there when the hats arrive we'll still know that there will be a smile on someone's face. We made hats with all sorts of colors. We all took a lot of time and effort to make all of these hats. We liked making hats so much that Danielle and I made about 3 to 4. Miss Sizer helped us a lot by making a lot of her own hats with her looms at home. We also heard that some of the middle schoolers have recently donated bathroom supplies to the homeless, which is very helpful to them. Thank you middle school for helping them with us too.
The hats are from size, of baby hats, toddler hats, regular hats, and bigger hats. We have made a lot of each size. We've also liked knitting hats so much that Miss Sizer assigned us to make this article about making our hats. In order to make hats like the one's we're making, you can grab a loom and start knitting.
HERE'S HOW YOU MAKE A HAT
1. Pick the size of loom and colors of yarn.
2. Tie the ends of the string together and start wrapping them around the pegs of the loom. Wrap the yarn around the looms two times, then use the knitting hook to put the bottom strands of yarn over the second strand.
3. Repeat until yo have enough for the brim.
4. To mkae the brim of the hat, fold the bottom part of the yarn to the top of the pegs and over.
5. Repeat wrapping the strings and pulling them over until yo have enough for the crown. Depending on how big you hat is on the regular sized hat, your hat needs to be at least 7 to 8 inches long for the crown of the hat.
6. After you finished step 5, get your needle and thread the yarn off the pegs and pull the top part of the hat together until it's off the loom to pull tight and then tie it. Now you're finished.
At the People's City Mission, there are about 235 people on average that stay there each night. People at the mission need all sorts of items like food, bedding, and bathroom supplies. Families are usually there because some of them couldn't pay enough for a house. Other people have an addiction to cigarettes and tobacco.
Everyone can help them. We were so glad making the hats and we're glad Miss Sizer gave us permission to help the homeless. Making these has has taught us something, to care about other people that don't have a home and as many things as we do. If you would like to help them, please visit:
